Did you know 43% of home insurance claims between May 2022 and April 2023 were the result of certain weather events? (Source: Allianz claims data).

Research commissioned by Allianz1 shows that while 29% of surveyed Australian homeowners2 are considering a home renovation in the next six months, one quarter of those who are planning to renovate aren’t factoring making their homes more resilient to certain weather events into their design decisions.

This is part of the reason why Allianz has partnered with the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) to create the Green Specs digital tool, built from a technical guide by the GBCA to help Australians make their blueprints both greener, and more sustainable.

Users of the guide can explore the rooms of a digital floorplan and experiment to see how various design changes impact a homes resilience to certain weather events, as well as the energy efficiency and indoor air quality impacts.

You can also filter these various changes by cost – a crucial inclusion, because 60% of surveyed homeowners say that cost is a key barrier to renovating sustainably.

“Green Specs aims to bridge a knowledge gap for Australian homeowners,” explains Sema Whittle, Allianz’s General Manager of Corporate Governance and Sustainability. “It provides a wealth of information about everything from using sustainable building materials, choosing greener appliances, improving a home’s resilience to bushfire or flood, and more.”

1 About the research
The research was conducted by YouGov via an online survey conducted between 29 May to 5 June 2023. The sample comprised of 1,043 Australian homeowners and investors aged 18+ including 739 homeowners and 304 investors. Homeowners were defined as Australians aged 18+ who own the home that they are living in only (outright or with a mortgage) and don’t own any other property in Australia. Investors were defined as Australians aged 18+ who own at least an investment property (outright or with a mortgage) which they are not living in. For brevity, both homeowners and investors are referred to as ‘homeowners’. The data is weighted by age, gender, and region to reflect the Australian homeowners and investors population estimates.

2 Almost one third of homeowners are looking to renovate within the next six months (29 per cent).
